Story Time: My Best Concert

Recently I listened to a podcast sharing people’s best concert experiences, and it got me thinking about my own favorite concert.  I love experiencing live music, a trait passed down from my parents who are both big fans of live performances.  I have been fortunate enough to attend a great number of amazing shows in my life.  But which was the very best?  A few come to mind immediately: the Britney Spears concert in Las Vegas for my birthday with a group of my west coast friends, or winning VIP wristbands to the Panorama music festival when Janet Jackson was headlining.  In general, my music tastes always lean towards pop and I have an affinity for fierce divas. Other favorite concert highlights in this category include Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Cher, and Lady Gaga.  But which of these powerful women would take the coveted top spot?

The answer is clear in my mind.  The best event I have ever seen was the Jennifer Lopez: It’s My Party Tour.  To me, Jennifer Lopez is the ultimate entertainer.  I think she is the hardest working woman in show business.  Through a diverse portfolio of entertainment and products, whether her music, performances, films, or fragrances— she delivers Every. Single. Time.  And in 2019 she set out on her first American headlining tour to celebrate her 50th Birthday.  And I had to be there.  I already knew she put on an amazing show, from attending her residency at the Planet Hollywood Casino.  But for this new tour, she was coming to an arena near me.  And I was thrilled to show my support in her hometown, New York represent!  I decided to treat my boyfriend Zac to an over-the-top date night and scored decent seats for the show at Madison Square Garden.

The event was on a Saturday night and we prepared to head to midtown, dressed to the nines.  But when we arrived at the subway station, the train was temporarily closed due to a power outage.  We were able to quickly jump in a cab and arrive with time to spare. At the time, I didn’t think much of it.  We grabbed some cocktails, found our seats, and settled in for a fun night.  The concert started and we stood with the rest of the sold-out crowd to welcome Jennifer Lopez to the “World’s Most Famous Arena”.  She delivered three amazing songs, hit after hit.  Until, quite suddenly, the venue went completely black.  The power outage had hit the rest of Manhattan.  We sat quietly in total darkness for a moment, shocked and surprised, waiting to see what would happen next.  You could see Jennifer in a sparkly costume run onto the stage with arms outstretched, attempting to calm the crowds while they figured out what was happening.  We waited patiently, but after a few minutes the emergency aisle lights were illuminated, and a loudspeaker advised that the concert had to be cancelled.  Along with 19,000 fellow fans, we were evacuated into the pitch-black streets of New York City.

We felt disappointed in the moment, of course, but it was also exciting and a little thrilling.  We knew this was a once in a lifetime thing to experience.  Once we found our way home, we discovered that news of the concert cancellation was being broadcast nationwide.  Jennifer had also been very active on social media immediately following the evacuation.  She was devastated that the concert was cancelled and felt an urgent need to remedy the situation.  “We will make this up to you, I promise,” she tweeted.  “I love you!”  As someone in the arena when the lights went out, I felt like she was speaking directly to me.  I was invested in the conversation, as if together we were a part of something big. Within hours, the concert was rescheduled to Monday night, only two days later.  “It’s going to take more than a city-wide blackout to shut us down!” she posted.  The excitement for the concert we felt on Saturday had now grown exponentially.  We had a second chance!

There was an eerie feeling of Déjà Vu as we filed back into Madison Square Garden just a few days later.  We picked up the same cocktails, sat down in the same seats, and once again settled in with anticipation.  The crowd was familiar, the same cast of characters we had exited with two nights earlier.  One man in our row was even wearing the exact same shirt, a custom printed tee featuring illustrations from the film Selena.  When the lights went down again, this time on purpose to begin the show, the crowd leapt to their feet.  The floor vibrated with thundering cheer.  “Let’s try this again,” her voice broke through the darkness.  And try again, we absolutely did.  Jennifer Lopez triumphantly returned onto that stage once again, this time with something to prove.  She came to slay and the energy was like nothing I have ever felt.  She delivered more than I thought possible, with the help from her amazing dancers and musicians.  The show was spectacular!  We danced ourselves to exhaustion and screamed until our throats ached.  It was without question the very best concert that I have ever seen.  And I will be forever grateful to Jennifer Lopez for giving us that experience.
